Review:
I don't have much to say about Walk Hard. It's completely stupid, but it does have its laughs. There are also plenty of NOT funny moments as well, which made me groan. Such as playing with Cox. His name is Cox, I get it. It sounds like "COCKS". After joke number ten using "Cox" as the punchline, I wished for something new. It is also such a stupid movie that there's no way I could familiarize with any of the so-called drama, which in itself was flat and predictable, because I've seen all those movies where this false drama is supposed to be real. I hate it when a movie relies on you knowing what movie the joke is coming from in order for it to be funny. A good example is Meet the Spartans. It's not funny just because I know that you're making fun of a popular movie.
On the other hand, there were a fair amount of decent laughs from open to close. Sometimes the self-aware humor worked. Such as when Cox is depressed and one of his band members is smoking reefer and he says "You don't want any part of this, man." That bit was pretty funny. The third time around, we'd already seen that joke before. Time to skip it. There were also plenty other times when it was just plain NOT funny. Every cameo with a recognizable actor isn't even that funny. On top of that, everyone refers to themselves as the band or singer that they are with their full name. I hate it when John Lennon says "After all, I'm John Lennon of The Beatles" and then Jack Black says "And then me, Paul McCartney of The Beatles says that John Lennon is an asshole." Next line is "And me, Ringo Starr of The Beatles thinks that John Lennon of The Beatles is too controlling."
ZZZZZZZzzzzzzz.... Not. Funny.
After I finished watching it, I thought "Yeah, it's about what I expected." And that's true. It is a watch it, laugh and forget it movie. It doesn't having the lingering dramatic gut-punch of Knocked Up or 40 Year Old Virgin. While this isn't a bad thing, it's also a little unfortunate that it takes more of the tone of the lower denominator, and not even attempt to reach a higher or smarter plateau. It's a formula that works for those looking for brainless laughs, plenty of dick jokes and sexual undertones, mixed with a dash of drug use here and there.
Walk Hard is completely moronic, but I also had a fair amount of laughter from open to close. It only works on the most base and idiotic of levels, but if that's what you're in the mood for, it will surely deliver. I think this will be well liked by many, and will be one of those movies that college and high school nerds will quote incessantly, showing how they can bond through the mutual appreciation of a stupid comedy.
