Summary:
The incompetent group of our favorite moronic cops comes to the big screen in Miami! A bio-terrorist attack in a building hosting a police convention means that the mayor, and all of Miami's police force are locked down until they find a cure to the weapon. This means that the only cops available are the late-to-arrive Reno Sheriff's Department's least finest!
Review:
First of all, it's RENO 911! If you haven't watched the show, it's basically a spoof of COPS in Reno, with some of the stupidest cops you'll ever meet. To go to this movie thinking it's anything more than an hour and a half episode that airs on Comedy Central would be asking more than what you'll get.
I've seen seasons 1-3 of Reno. Considering it's gone three seasons on what works best in concept for material to last say, one season total, it's done a pretty good job for itself. I never go an episode without at least cracking a grin, and there are some pure genius episodes - like a lot of season 1 and the last three of season 2 - that knock me dead with the comedic genius involved. Reno 911: Miami is like a decent episode. I had a few big laughs in between sporadic bouts of smaller laughter throughout.
I love that Reno is rated R, and they went out of their way to make sure they took advantage of it. There are superfluous booby shots, sex scenes, bad language and minimal violence. The violence isn't more than what's been on the show (namely the episode with the cat on the roof; CLASSIC!), but we finally get those boobies that have always been censored. The greatest display of R-rated freedom is in their first night at the hotel. It's a long scene in which we see the different acts of the troops doing things in their rooms. I thought it was pretty damned funny myself. Or the sex scene between Weigel and Dangle. R-O-F-L
Taking the troop to Miami didn't do much in the way of new jokes. In fact, we have a recurring character come to Miami while they are there. Why? I really can't say. There isn't much that they do in Miami that couldn't have been done while they were still in Reno. Two out of every ten jokes that occur could not have been done in Reno, but even those moments typically feel like they haven't left their typical locale. There is the chance to spoof Scarface, and they make fun of many of the cliches that go with Miami. Plus the cameos are amusing. Especially The Rock's!
In a nutshell, if you're a fan of the show, then you'll get a kick out of Reno 911!: Miami. It's a slightly above average episode with boobies! Add to that the inclusion of Cathy Shim, who I want SO BADLY to marry, or do bad things with at least. That woman has SO GOT IT. God does exist, and he took his time with that gem of a hottie. RwwwwAAAhrr!! She's been in a few episodes on the series, and was pretty damned funny this time around as well.
For cheap laughs and senseless booby shots, you can do worse than Reno.
For those who live under a rock, RENO 911 is a Comedy Central spoof of COPS, with a cast of incompetent moronic cops walking the beat and providing laughs, mostly in a series of small skits. With enough material that seems to work best for the length of a season, it still manages to be fairly funny a majority of the time even into season 3. I haven’t watched the current season at all, because I rent the DVDs.
RENO 911 MIAMI is a 90 minute long episode of the series. This time, the Reno crew heads to Miami for a police convention, but after a night of partying hard they arrive late to the convention, with the entire Miami police force and the mayor locked inside the building due to a bio-terrorist attack. It’s up to the Reno guys to find an antidote and police the entire city.
The laughs come fairly easily in the first third, but by the time the final half hour arrives, it seems as if the comedy well ran a little dry. I feel as though they spent the same amount of time – and just about the same budget – making this movie as they did for an episode on the series. The greatest asset to a theatrical release is more expressive freedom with the cruder jokes. With an R rating, they make use of uncensored explicit language and unblurred nudity from open to close.
With that wafer-thin storyline comes once again their efforts at providing laughs much in the same manner as any episode of the show. Each scene barely connects into the other for the purpose of plot advancement, more than to be funny and move onto something else in search of more random laughs. Most of the hijinks that ensue are no different than what happens in Reno, and even the scenes that are incorporated into Miami’s beaches and shipyards still have a “Reno” attitude to it.
Reno 911 MIAMI isn’t one of the better episodes of the show, and for 90 minutes it runs itself ragged in search of a juicy plot and even jucier jokes. Some great cameos livened it up a bit - especially with Dwayne The Rock Johnson - but even the few fleeting moments of bigger named actors wasn’t enough to make RENO anything more than a halfway decent comedy with a few spurts of genuine laughter, and a smattering of random chuckles in between.
I give it two and a half out of four stars.
